'BLOOD SERIES' BY KIM ROSE

Kim Rose's Blood Series is a journey through the visceral, the ephemeral, and the transformative. Created for her show Born to Live, these pieces pulse with the raw, unfiltered essence of the artist herself—crafted from a potent blend of Kim's own blood and poison. In this sacred act of creation, the videos are not manipulated by digital effects, but instead capture live, unaltered reactions of blood and poison merging, captured in Kim’s Los Angeles studio as an intimate, organic performance. The result is a stunning, continuous loop—a rhapsodic dance of life and decay.

The NFTs themselves are not static objects, but living, breathing entities, tethered to real-time data. As they age, they grow darker and slower, inching toward their inevitable death over the course of 100 years. Then, as if in defiance of entropy, they "die" for nine months before being reborn—splintering into radiant ribbons of gold for a fleeting day. This cyclical transformation is a meditation on the impermanence of existence, an art piece that evolves through time, ceaselessly moving toward the unknown.

This is a work that transcends the moment, a reminder that art is not bound by time, but instead, a reflection of the perpetual cycle of life, death, and renewal.

"We most likely will not see the rebirth of these art pieces, but our surviving generation will"

A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTIST

"The concept behind this piece sparked the theme for my show Born to Live. Most of my ideas begin in my journal, where I can freely explore and push creative boundaries. But very few ideas have ever made my heart race or caused me to break into a cold sweat. This one, in particular, made me want to curl up into a ball. Lately, the ideas that frighten me seem to be the ones I can’t shake from my mind. As I journaled about what this piece meant to me, I cried. Even now, if I allow myself to reflect on it too deeply, I still feel the emotion rise.

It was a reaction so powerful, I had no choice but to create the piece I had written about.

I have always had a strong aversion to blood. (If you made a face reading that, don’t worry—I did the same thing when I first thought of it.) Growing up, my mother used to say I had such a steady hand that I should be a surgeon. I’d laugh, knowing that I could never consider it—the thought of blood alone made my skin crawl. But despite my fear, I couldn’t help but be drawn to the idea of blood as something deeply precious, life-giving, and profound. How it embodies both life and death, intertwined. How powerful it would be to create with it.

These NFT’s were created using a mixture of my own blood and poison. The result was something I never expected: a series of movements more beautiful than anything I had ever seen. What I once found horrifying, I now found mesmerizing. It moved in ways that paint and ink never could—it felt alive.

As these NFTs age, they slow down and grow darker, eventually turning black and 'dying' after 100 years. Then, they glow in gold for nine months before being reborn. While we may not see this transformation ourselves, future generations will."
